Every fall there is a moment when the closet suddenly feels wrong. The summer pieces are too thin, last year's sweaters look tired and you have a long list of things you "need". The good news: you do not need much, and it does not have to cost much either.

A capsule wardrobe is a small set of pieces that all work together, so a handful of items turns into weeks of outfits. Three simple rules keep a small wardrobe from feeling repetitive:

Under $20: the layering basics

These are the hardworking pieces you will wear under and over everything else.
